Introduction

Benilde-St. Margaret’s School has a long and storied athletics and activities history. The legacy of BSM teams exemplifies excellence dating back the origin of each school.

The Benilde boys’ teams and St. Margaret’s girls’ teams enjoyed success through the early and mid-20th century. However, girl’s opportunities for competitive physical activity were limited until Federal Legislation Title IX became law in 1972. It required our society to recognize a girl’s right to participate in sports on a plane equal to that of boys.  During this time the girls of St. Margaret’s Academy participated in physical education classes and eventually began to form clubs that were athletic in nature.

The second hurdle in the advancement of athletics and completive activities at BSM was that private schools weren’t allowed to officially compete in Minnesota State High School League tournaments. In 1973 a bill amending Minnesota Statue 129.12 to clarify the legal position of the League was submitted to the legislature. It was passed in May 1973. The bill further provided that membership in the Minnesota State High School League shall be available to any high school in Minnesota. The MSHSL Board of Directors accepted the applications for membership of 36 non-public schools effective August 1, 1974. The list included Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Since then, the Red Knights have earned nearly 50 State Championship titles in fifteen different MSHSL-sanctioned sports. This number is quite extraordinary when you consider the fact that there are over 600 member schools in Minnesota. Even more impressive, BSM ranks among the TOP TEN of all-time Team State Championship Titles. You can find the full ranking order on the MSHSL website tournament archives HERE (updated through spring 2023).

MSHSL Student Recognition:

Students are at the core of everything the Minnesota State High School League does, and the League honors them with several awards and recognition programs.

The ExCEL and Triple ‘A’ awards celebrate juniors and seniors for their work in the classroom, participation in athletics and fine arts, leadership skills, and connection to their communities. The Spotlight on Scholarship program also recognizes individuals and teams for their academic achievements.

The League has also recently created two social media campaigns – the Sportsmanship Challenge and Most Valuable Teammate (MVT). The Most Valuable Teammate (MVT) celebrates the characteristics of leadership, respect, and reliability, while the Sportsmanship Challenge recognizes great acts of sportsmanship across all
