Senior High Advisers: Katherine Johnson

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Senior High Student Council serves as a vital link between the student body and the administration. By collaborating closely, they organize and implement school-wide events that foster a positive and inclusive school culture at BSM.

Senior High Student Council

Mission Statement: The BSM Student Council is dedicated to enriching the experiences of students and staff by promoting school spirit, amplifying student voices, organizing engaging activities, and offering leadership opportunities beyond the classroom.

Length of season: Student Council members are elected by their peers within their grade and serve for one academic year.

Student Council Subcommittees: 

  1. Spirit Weeks
  2. School Spirit for Sports
  3. Public Relations
  4. Fun School Events
  5. Dances
  6. School Improvement

Meeting times: The Senate meets during every homeroom. The Congress meets with their specific subcommittee every Thursday during homeroom, with additional meetings before or after school as needed.

Members are also expected to be actively involved during events.

Elections: There are two paths for joining the BSM student council. 

Student Council Senate Eligibility Requirements:
Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must participate in an interview with the advisors and produce a 1-2 minute campaign video.
Election Process: Each class elects four members through a vote. In the event of a tie, both candidates will serve.

Student Council Congress Eligibility Requirements:
Eligibility Requirements: Interested students must interview with the advisors. The advisors then select four members for each of the six subcommittees.

Student leadership:
Members of the Student Council Senate and Congress have the chance to take on various leadership roles. They are responsible for designing and executing plans for key events and initiatives, including:

  • Homecoming
  • School pep fests
  • Dress up days
  • December Holiday Events
  • Charity drives
  • March Madness
  • Prom

Time Commitment:
The student council meets during homeroom weekly and occasionally meets before or after school. 

During events, student council members are expected to be present and active in running the various activities.

Junior High Student Council

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s junior high student council is made up of four elected representatives from each grade. To be elected, they must participate in an interview with the advisors and create a 1-2 minute campaign video. They must be voted in my members of their class.

They are responsible for helping plan spirit weeks, dress-up days, monthly fun activities, and decorating the school. They meet once a week during homeroom with the senior high student council to help plan on one of the six subcommittees.

Composition:
Four elected representatives from each grade.

Election Process:
– Participate in an interview with the advisors.
– Give a speech to your class during homeroom.
– Be voted in by members of their class.

Responsibilities:
– Help plan spirit weeks.
– Organize dress-up days.
– Plan monthly fun activities.
– Decorate the school.

Meetings:
– Meet once a week during homeroom.
– Collaborate with the senior high student council.
– Participate in one of the six subcommittees for planning activities.
