The National Honor Society is an organization of students selected for membership based on outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, and service. To be eligible for consideration for membership, candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better, must have been in attendance at Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School for at least one semester prior to eligibility, and must be members of the junior or senior class. Once selected, active members must maintain a cumulative GPA of no lower than 3.40, and must continue to uphold the Society’s high standards for leadership, character, and service.

Selection to NHS is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for membership in NHS; instead, they provide information to be used by the Faculty Council to support their candidacy for membership. Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty Council at BSM. This is not an election, nor is membership automatically conferred simply because a student has achieved a specified level of academic performance.

NHS meets once a month, as per national standards. These monthly meetings are mandatory for active members. NHS members must also participate actively in NHS-sponsored events, activities and service projects. NHS offers many opportunities for active participation and service; an active member should have little difficulty meeting these obligations.

National World Language Honor Society

In the spring of 1997, the World Language Department started local chapters of national language honor societies at Benilde-St. Margaret’s for French, Latin and Spanish. In 2018, the National Chinese Honor Society was added. A separate national organization exists for each of these languages.

The World Language Department’s goal in creating these honor societies is to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievement, and to create enthusiasm for different cultures and language learning.

The requirements for acceptance are to be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the 2nd semester of their second year of language learning at BSM, have a 3.7 grade point average in the language, and a 3.5 cumulative average. Students will stay on the society’s national registrar even if they are no longer enrolled in a language class. However, only those who continue their BSM language classes through their senior year will be honored with a purple cord at commencement.

Look for an application from your language teacher in early February, which will note the current year’s application deadline. Applicants who miss the deadline will not be considered, but may apply the following year. We must meet the deadline set forth by the bylaws of the national organizations.
